a day agoFreund: Why Liverpool boss Klopp world best

first_imgFreund: Why Liverpool boss Klopp world bestby Paul Vegasa day agoSend to a friendShare the loveFormer Tottenham midfielder Steffen Freund believes Lucien Favre is a good coach for Borussia Dortmund – but Jürgen Klopp’s emotional link with his players has no equal.Liverpool boss Klopp is the best football coach in the world because of the connection he establishes with players on an emotional level, according to Freund. “That is, of course, the wonderful thing when you compare the coaches: Lucien Favre and Jürgen Klopp,” Freund told Omnisport. “Favre is calm and well-balanced, with a good tactical instinct. But I would always prefer Jürgen Klopp, because he is the coach who can also reach players emotionally because he himself is like that, and because he knows that the day has come when he will sweep the players along with special moments, through his emotions. And that’s why Jürgen is the best in the world right now.”Freund thinks the “passion” Klopp has helped to instil within his Liverpool squad will serve them well in the title race – particularly when their form deserts them.”If you look at the Premier League so far, everything is playing for Liverpool,” said Freund. “Even their own games are won late. It’s not always good football, but they have played with a lot of passion. Jürgen Klopp also exemplifies this passion. “They also have the necessary luck at the moment, but because I also played in the Premier League for five years and I also worked there as an assistant coach [with Tottenham], there will come a phase where Liverpool will lose. It looks so safe and clear at the moment, but that’s not how they play. And then the question is how quickly they get back into the corner. Along with Manchester City, Liverpool are favourites for the title.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

Juve vs Sampdoria team news: CR7 returns to starting XI

first_imgJuventus are seeking to get back to winning ways on Saturday, when they host Sampdoria at the Allianz Stadium. It took a late goal from Cristiano Ronaldo to prevent them suffering a shock loss to Atalanta on Boxing Day, when they salvaged a 2-2 draw after being reduced to 10 men after 53 minutes when Rodrigo Bentancur was dismissed. That was just the second occasion they have spilt points this season and they will want to finish a successful 2018 on a high against a Sampdoria side in the equation for the top four. Match Preview Mario Mandzukic Juventus Roma Serie A 12222018Juventus showed a rare chink in their armour on Boxing Day as they were held to a 2-2 draw against Atalanta, yet that was only the second time in 18 Serie A fixtures this season that they had dropped points. It was a fixture that they started without Cristiano Ronaldo in the starting XI, but the Portuguese came on and dramatically turned the game just as it seemed that the 10-man Bianconeri might be slipping towards their first defeat of the domestic season.Controversy over match officials, which had been started by Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis prior to the match, continued following that encounter, in which Rodrigo Bentancur had been dismissed for two yellow cards. “I’ll leave Banti, who refereed well, aside because it’s not elegant to make these allusions and declarations. I’ll never speak, we need to educate the fans,” Juve boss Massimiliano Allegri lamented. “I could make a scene but that would be wrong, in Italy anything and everything goes and we never learn.“I’m sorry for Italian football, there’s no desire to improve Italian football. There was a beautiful setting today, but we always need to talk about other things.“In my opinion there’s no desire to improve, I’m disappointed for the children and my children. We don’t want to improve this sport.”Sampdoria, meanwhile, are in good form after overcoming Chievo 2-0 on December 26, and coach Marco Giampaolo wants it to go on.“I told the squad that to achieve important things you need to be willing to sacrifice some things, and sacrifice isn’t limited to only two months,” he said after the weekend win, which extended their unbeaten run to seven games.“We need to work on ourselves and even renounce some things, but the reward for that sacrifice can be high.“I don’t look at the table, even if it gives us self confidence, we just need to think about playing our own games as well as possible because there are always three points available.”last_img read more

Arsenal must snub James and go for Suarez – Lauren

first_imgArsenal must forget about signing the likes of James Rodriguez or Gelson Martins and make Barcelona midfielder Denis Suarez their top priority in January, says former Gunners defender Lauren.Alongside Liverpool and Tottenham, Arsenal are the latest Premier League side to have been credited with an interest in the Colombia international, who is currently on loan at Bayern Munich from Real Madrid.AdChoices广告The 27-year-old is said to be one of Unai Emery’s side’s biggest targets for the current transfer window, but ex-right-back Lauren, who won two Premier League titles with the club, says they should look elsewhere to strengthen their midfield. Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘There is no creativity’ – Can Solskjaer get Man Utd scoring freely again? ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? “I’m not sure that Arsenal should be seriously considering James Rodriguez, even on loan,” he told Bwin. “Rodriguez has got a lot of talent, but the warning signs are there that he hasn’t been able to settle at either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich. He comes with a massive wage bill so Arsenal would have to make sure he was fully on board with the philosophy of the club.”Rodriguez has played in the big games for the big clubs so there’s no doubting his talent. If Emery can get the best out of him then he could make a real impact on whether Arsenal qualify for next season’s Champions League. It’s a roll of the dice.”Instead, Lauren believes they should go back to one of their earlier potential signings, urging them to snap up Denis Suarez as he continues to struggle for playing time in Spain.”Suarez should be Arsenal’s number one target this transfer window. He’s an excellent player and he’s having to fight with so many top players to get first-team football at Barcelona,” Lauren added. “Arsenal should look to sign him above the likes of Rodriguez, no doubt about it.”The north London club also have an interest in bringing in Yannick Ferreira Carrasco, as the ex-Atletico Madrid winger is said to want a move away from Chinese Super League side Dalian Yifang.According to Lauren, it would be a good idea to take him to the Emirates Stadium.”Carrasco is a very good player that could offer a real presence going forward for Arsenal,” he added. “He proved himself at Atletico Madrid and had a good World Cup. He’s got the ability to beat a player and has good feet.”If Carrasco seriously wants to come back to European football for the benefit of his career, I would imagine he would need to drop his wage demands and join Arsenal.”Carrasco is still young, but if he wants to challenge himself then he can’t afford to stay away from the top leagues for much longer. He won’t be testing himself in the same way in the Chinese League and it could affect his chances of reaching his potential.”The discussion around the Gunners is not entirely about potential signings, however, as they will lose midfielder Aaron Ramsey for free at the end of the season. The Wales international looks bound for a move to Juventus in the summer, though the Italian champions could pay to sign him in January.Either way, Lauren feels it is a blow to his former team.”Ramsey’s likely departure has perhaps been something the club could have sorted out earlier. He’s been outstanding for the club and a few long-term injuries stopped him from really fulfilling what he could have achieved for both himself and Arsenal. It’s a blow that he seems set to leave and he’s not going to be easy to replace.”Ramsey is one of Arsenal’s best players and should be playing up until the moment he leaves. Arsenal don’t have the luxury of being able to leave someone of Ramsey’s quality on the bench. They are in a battle to finish in the top four and the future of the club is more important that focusing on a player who looks set to be leaving.”Ramsey has given 100% every time he’s been on the pitch so there’s no need to drop him. If he was to drop in form or show any lack of professionalism then it’s a different story but looking at how well he played against Chelsea that certainly doesn’t seem to be the case.”Meanwhile, there is some uncertainty surrounding Mesut Ozil, who has been left out of the squad on occasion by new boss Emery, but it is up to the former Real Madrid star to prove his worth.”Ozil has to show Emery that he’s willing to fight for his place and get into the first team again,” Lauren said. “Emery is a fair manager and will only play players that are willing to put their all on to the pitch. For him to be out of the squad or on the bench, Emery perhaps has question marks over how Ozil can fit in a system that is demanding of its players.”last_img read more

Match Preview Tite Brazil Copa AmericaBrazil manager Tite says he understands the supporters’ frustrations at recent performances but insists their backing can help turn the team’s fortunes around. The Selecao were jeered during the goalless draw with Venezuela in Salvador on Tuesday, with two goals ruled out via VAR not helping the fans’ mood. There were audible boos in their opening game against Bolivia too, as the eight-time tournament winners struggled to break down Eduardo Villegas’ side.A second half double from Philippe Coutinho and a third from Everton eventually secured the three points, but the home crowd were far from satisfied at what they had just witnessed.”When we don’t get the result, of course it’s frustrating. And we feel that. It’s not the same thing playing here or elsewhere,” Tite said. “We are humans. You want to put on a show and score a bunch of goals, but you need to be able to handle these types of situations. Our job requires that.”Brazil now find themselves in a similar position to three years ago when they went into the final group game of the 2016 Copa America against Peru with four points from two games. They would go on to lose 1-0 and were eliminated from the tournament. Manager Dunga was sacked as a result and Tite appointed as his successor. The situation is not quite so critical on this occasion as the tournament’s format sees two of the best third-placed teams qualify for the knockout stages. However, Tite knows his side not only need to get a result but put on a positive performance if he is to win over a sceptical fan base.He has, though, called on the fans to get behind the side for fear another negative reception will prove detrimental to their performance.”I’m very proud of what I’ve accomplished here. If I get the support of the fans, I would like the same support for the young players,” he added.”It’s OK to have big expectations, but just give [the support]. I’m sure it will help the player a lot. If it helps me, imagine what it could do to a player.”Peru, meanwhile, will be wary of a Brazilian backlash but should go into the game full of confidence after a win and a draw from their first two games.Venezuela have to beat Bolivia in the other group game to have any chance of overhauling the top two. But even if that proves the case, Peru or Brazil are already likely to have gathered enough points to qualify in third.last_img read more

‘We don’t want PL like Serie A where Juve win it every year’

first_imgLiverpool chairman Tom Werner saw the Reds endure Premier League title pain in 2018-19, but he is adamant that English football doesn’t “want a league like Serie A where Juventus win it every year without any competition”.The Reds missed out on the English top-flight crown last season by a solitary point, with Manchester City pipping them to the post in a thrilling fight to the finish.A wait for domestic dominance at Anfield is now set to reach the 30-year mark, with Jurgen Klopp still being charged with the task of bringing that barren run to a close. Article continues below Editors’ Picks Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? Ox-rated! Dream night in Genk for Liverpool ace after injury nightmare Messi a man for all Champions League seasons – but will this really be Barcelona’s? Werner insists there will be no letting up in that pursuit, with Liverpool happy to form part of such a competitive division and to have seen more major honours come up for grabs on their 2019-20 schedule. He told The Athletic of the ambition driving the Champions League winners forward: “I think our fans are like our players, manager and us as owners, they want to win everything.“Of course the league title is a big, big ambition but I think last season taught us the key is to focus on just winning the next game and being greedy to keep winning and see where that gets us.“There’s so much to compete for this season thanks to our success in Madrid. The Super Cup, the Club World Cup competition, domestic cups, the Champions League again and yes, the Premier League.“We go into every one of them knowing we are good enough to be in the conversation to win them. I think that’s pretty cool.“The Liverpool team on that pitch over the past year was such a united team. Listen, we have to compliment Man City. They played flawless football in the Premier League for the final four months of last season. They didn’t drop a point after January.“I’m not taking anything away from our season but City are a magnificent football team and it’s going to be a big challenge for us again.“I think last season was very good for the sport. It’s important for the Premier League that the competition is there. We don’t want a league like Serie A where Juventus win it every year without any competition.”Werner added on a stunning climax to the 2018-19 campaign, which saw Liverpool counter their Premier League disappointment with European glory: “As special as last season was for Liverpool, it was bittersweet towards the end. As successful as we were, we didn’t finish the job in the Premier League.”To have the opportunity to win the Champions League was so special. We came into this experience wanting to win trophies for the team and for our fans. It was really gratifying to witness that in Madrid. It was an extraordinary evening.” Subscribe to Goal’s Liverpool Correspondent Neil Jones’ weekly email bringing you the best Liverpool FC writing from around the weblast_img read more

Michigan State Running Back Calls Michigan “Our Little Sisters”

The Wolverines have more bowl wins, more overall wins and more national titles than Sparty, and they lead the all-time series 69-36-5.However, the script has been flipped lately. Michigan State has won eight of the last 10 meetings between the two schools dating back to 2008.In that time frame, Michigan State has won three Big Ten titles. Michigan? They’ve won zero.Recent history might explain why Michigan State running back L.J. Scott called out Michigan as “our little sisters” during this week’s Big Ten Media Days. Scott was asked about the rivalry, and said the lack of respect from Michigan fans and players is palpable.“It’s just like we get no respect when it comes to them,” Scott said. “And I learned that when I first got here as a freshman.”Pressed for why that is the case, Scott fired his shot.“I don’t know, probably because they’re our little sisters, I guess,” he said. You can see the full video of Scott’s quotes below, courtesy of Andrew Vailliencourt.Clearly, these two teams don’t like each other. The fan bases don’t either.Michigan and Michigan State will renew their rivalry on Oct. 20 in East Lansing. I will say it’s kind of funny, we’ve been blessed with many great gifts and we’re so thankful for that, but she doesn’t have as many Alabama outfits as she had Florida outfits. So she may start to feel an affinity for Florida and I won’t go out and say that I strategically planned that, but I may have used a little strategy. No but we’re excited to see what she likes and see who she wants to pick as her favorite team.”We can’t wait to see Rutledge back on the air later this season.last_img read more

Analyst Predicting Three Top 25 Teams To Lose On Saturday

(Photo by Reese Strickland/Getty Images)The third week of the 2019 college football season isn’t bringing a bunch of highly-anticipated matchups. In fact, there are no games between top 25 teams. It’s the first time since the fall of 2017 that one full college football weekend didn’t include any ranked vs. ranked contests.Often, though, the college football weekends you look forward to the least end up being the most exciting. That could certainly be the case this weekend.Ralph Russo, the Associated Press’ national college football writer, is predicting some chaos. He’s released his full picks for Week 3 and has three top 25 teams going down. One of those upsets is No. 9 Florida at Kentucky.No. 9 Florida (minus 7) at KentuckyWildcats snapped a three-decade losing streak to the Gators last year, and try to make it two straight, but without QB Terry Wilson (knee) … KENTUCKY 24-21.Russo also has:No. 19 Iowa losing at Iowa StateNo. 21 Maryland losing at TempleWeekends like this have brought major upsets in the past, as noted by ESPN’s Chris Fallica. Each of the last 5 times there was a weekend without a ranked matchup, at least 2 ranked teams lost to NR teams. 9/25/04 was last weekend without a ranked matchup that every ranked team won. Indian selectors are spoilt for choice and that’s always good: Sunil Gavaskar

first_img India Today Web Desk New DelhiJanuary 29, 2019UPDATED: January 29, 2019 23:50 IST Virat Kohli’s Team India have defeated New Zealand in the 5-match ODI series after winning the first 3 matches. (AP Photo)HIGHLIGHTSSunil Gavaskar said India are coming good because of choices in fifth and sixth bowlersGavaskar said India have been a far more superior side than New Zealand in the ODI seriesGavaskar opined that the USP for this Indian team is the belief they have in themselvesSunil Gavaskar was impressed with the depth of the current Indian squad and felt that the selectors have the brilliant headache of choice everytime they are to choose a team. Virat Kohli’s Team India is famous for throwing selection surprises and have been looking to get the perfect balance ahead of the ICC World Cup 2019 in England.Gavaskar felt that the Indian squad is more or less decided and the only thing they are looking at are the fifth and sixth bowlers, where have a number of players to chose from at their disposal.”I think you are looking at the fifth and sixth bowlers, that is where India is coming good. Hardik Pandya is back for the first time since September and he bowled and fielded very well, that was one brilliant comeback. Then there is Kedar Jadhav as well. Indian selectors are spoilt for choice and that’s always good,” Gavaskar told India Today.Gavaskar said that Team India has been far more superior than New Zealand in their performances in the last three ODIs and the Kiwis have failed to live up to the expectations.India have already bagged the series with two matches to spare. India won all the three ODIs comprehensively, completely outplaying New Zealand and before Virat Kohli took a break from the rest of the tour, India had already sealed the ODI series.”I think the Indian team performed outstandingly. There is no question before this series started, the way New Zealand had been playing and how every player was in good form, it looked like they will be very good opposition.advertisement”You have to take into account that conditions have been very different. It has been very hot, only evenings has been a little windy – it’s like India. The pitches also don’t have grass but largely Indians have been far more superior than the New Zealanders,” Gavaskar opined. With series in the bag, India are expected to make a couple of changes over the next two games and give chances to players on the bench. Sunil Gavaskar wanted 19-year-old Shubman Gill to get a game in New Zealand.”Well because the No.3 spot is vacant, I would want to give Shubman Gill a game, give him a couple of games and see how he fares. If he gets to bat, you will get a fair idea how he is taking to international cricket.”India are the second best ODI team in the world at the moment, behind only England according to ICC rankings. Come the World Cup in June, India are one of the favourites to win the tournament and a huge reason for India’s success in recent times has been their bowling attack.”It also depends on the kind of pitches they [Indian bowlers] are bowling on. They are bowling exceedingly well in all conditions, only in England we have lost the ODI series and that was to the No.1 ODI team. England have a very balanced attack, also Pakistan. These are the three teams to look forward to.”Gavaskar said that the Indian team was ready for the World Cup considering their recent performances and the only issue he saw for India was if the weather in June would be cold in England.”The challenge has got to be the weather. In May and June if it’s colder, it may be a bit of an issue. India will want to play without jumpers because than can restrict movement a bit. Apart from that India are ready for the World Cup. I don’t feel they have reached their peak yet, their peak might actually come around the World Cup.”According to Sunil Gavaskar, the biggest USP of this Indian team is the amount of belief there is in the dressing room and he feels that is what makes them click.”I think the USP of this team is the belief in itself. All players are very confident and nobody takes undue pressure, every player is allowed to play in the way they have come up and they are made to feel they will get opportunities. This belief in themselves is the USP I think.”Also Read | India most successful ODI team since 2015 ICC World Cup: Tracing Team India’s journeyAlso Read | ICC T20 World Cup 2020 fixtures: India to start campaign vs South Africa on October 24Also Read | This is the India team I always fantasised about as a player: Sanjay ManjrekarFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. From fairy tale beginning to 6 losses in a row: Kolkata Knights Riders’ woes at IPL 2019

first_imgFrom fairy tale beginning to 6 losses in a row: Kolkata Knights Riders’ woes at IPL 2019IPL 2019: Kolkata Knight Riders began the season with four wins in five matches but are now in a position to miss the train to the playoffs courtesy inconsistent batting, poor bowling and below-par fielding.  advertisement Anita Jat New DelhiApril 28, 2019UPDATED: April 28, 2019 10:41 IST IPL 2019: Kolkata Knight Riders have to win all their remaining league matches to stand a chance of making the playoffs (AP Photo)HIGHLIGHTSKolkata Knight Riders have lost six matches on the trot in the 2019 IPLFrom 11 matches, KKR have managed only 8 points so far this seasonKKR have only 3 more matches left. They will face Mumbai Indians on SundayKolkata Knight Riders started the 2019 Indian Premier League on an impressive note winning 4 out of their first 5 matches. However, they then went on to lose 6 in a row and as the playoffs race heated up, their dream of a 3rd IPL title turned into a bit of a nightmare. It was like KKR were put on the trajectory of a bell curve, with a strict direction to not slip off it.In the first two weeks of the 2019 IPL, Kolkata were among the toppers in the points table, riding on four wins in their first five matches. Their first loss came against Delhi Capitals via a Super Over. They then beat Rajasthan Royals by eight wickets in Jaipur but since that win, Kolkata Knight Riders have struggled to return to winning ways. Now, KKR are in a race against time to make it to the playoffs, placed 6th on the points table, having suffered six consecutive defeats. From 11 matches this season, KKR have only 8 points to show. Also, four of their six last defeats have come at their fortress, the Eden Gardens. So what is the reason behind Kolkata’s downfall in the 2019 IPL?Actually, there are many!KKR batsmen have failed to produce consistent performances in the IPL season. The poor show from the batting side also resulted in some juggling in the playing order but they still haven’t managed to find the right combination there.Over-dependence on Andre RussellRobin Uthappa, Shubman Gill, and skipper Dinesh Karthik have all impressed only on single occasions. KKR were also blamed to be over-dependent on Andre Russell’s big knocks. However, Russell’s knocks of 65 off 25 balls, 45 off 21, and 50 not out off 44 have also resulted in losses, and it could be said it was mainly because he was brought in the games very late.advertisementRussell himself has been asking to be promoted to no. 4 as to get more time to play the match-winning knocks. Dinesh Karthik has also been playing at no. 5 or below and has failed to impress at those positions. The only time Karthik could contribute to KKR’s score with his unbeaten 97 was when he came up to bat at no. 4.Kolkata have also not been using Shubman Gill the way they should have. The 2017 U-19 World Cup hero, Shubman Gill was put to bat at no. 7 by KKR. But he is a top-order batsman and in one of the rare opportunities he got at the top, Gill had scored 65 off 39 when he was made to open against Delhi.Apart from the batting woes, KKR have failed to take early wickets and have leaked runs at the worst economy rate for any team this season (at a run rate of near 9.10), and have dropped catches.Remember the game where Jonny Bairstow was dropped thrice and he went on to smash an unbeaten 80 to win the match for Sunrisers Hyderabad? Those mistakes on the field have hurt the Knight Riders.KKR bowling unit has failed to deliverKolkata’s bowling department has also not clicked so far in the tournament. They have tried Prasidh Krishna, Lockie Ferguson, Sandeep Warrier, Harry Gurney, Yarra Prithviraj on the pace front while their key spinner Kuldeep Yadav has proved terribly expensive this season.Kuldeep was dropped from the side after his figures of 59 off 4 overs against Royal Challengers Bangalore. The perception this IPL has been that Eden Gardens is becoming into a graveyard for spinners, but Imran Tahir has produced his best IPL figures – 4 for 27 – at the Eden Gardens against Kolkata Knight Riders. With loopholes in all 3 departments, Kolkata Knight Riders are now left with only 3 games in hand and need to win all their remaining matches to stand a chance of making the playoffs. KKR, RR and Royal Challengers Bangalore are tied on 8 points each but KKR have a better Net Run Rate than the other two and that places them sixth on the table. Also Read | IPL 2019: Williamson hopeful of SRH’s playoff chances despite crushing defeat to RRAlso Read | Need to continue winning, says Steve Smith on playoff chances after beating SRHAlso See:For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. After nightmarish IPL 2019, Kuldeep Yadav ready to win World Cup for India

first_imgAfter nightmarish IPL 2019, Kuldeep Yadav ready to win World Cup for IndiaWorld Cup 2019: Kuldeep Yadav had a horror time in the 2019 Indian Premier League. He was dropped by Kolkata Knight Riders after 9 matches but Kuldeep is now determined to win the World Cup in different conditions.advertisement Ateet Sharma New DelhiMay 21, 2019UPDATED: May 21, 2019 19:57 IST The 2019 Indian Premier League was forgettable for Kuldeep Yadav (AP Photo)HIGHLIGHTSKuldeep Yadav took just 4 wickets from 9 games for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2019Kuldeep Yadav was dropped by the franchise for the team’s last 5 league matchesKuldeep has so far taken 87 wickets from 44 ODIs for India at an impressive average of 21.74It has been a busy Tuesday morning for Kuldeep Yadav in his hometown Kanpur. The India spinner is in the middle of a quick training session with his coach a few hours before catching a flight out of Lucknow to Mumbai en route London for his first World Cup. All that along with a farewell from the family, a photo session with the academy mates and graciously responding to everyone’s good luck wishes squeezed between is giving some anxious moments to the youngster. A quick visit to Varanasi the night before meant he’s sleep deprived too.”I went to visit the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Benares with family last evening,” Kuldeep Yadav told AajTak. “I always make it a point to visit after every few months.”This trip was special though, came as it just before departing for the biggest tournament of his life.”It is such a big opportunity, just like a dream for me. I want to perform really well in the World Cup. That is my main aim. I have been training hard for it. My full focus is on winning the cup for India,” says the 24-year-old.The 2019 Indian Premier League was forgettable for the chinaman bowler. After taking just 4 wickets from 9 games, Kuldeep Yadav was dropped by the franchise for the team’s last 5 league matches. Worse, he gave away runs at an economy of 8.66.”I was bowling well but still not getting wickets. I really don’t know why I was failing to get wickets despite bowling well. The Eden Gardens pitch was also very good for batting.. the ball wasn’t turning much there. If you gave a little bit of flight, it was easy for the batsman to take the ball into his radar and smash it out of the park. I think maybe I need to improve my bowling more if I have to play on such pitches,” Kuldeep Yadav said.advertisementThe performance could have had a huge demoralising effect, barely weeks before the World Cup. However, Kuldeep Yadav went back to the place where he had learnt his first cricketing lesson, trained hard under the watchful eyes of his childhood coach and regained the confidence.”I got a good break during the IPL. I rested well and have recovered fully. I have worked on my bowling extensively in the last 10 days. I am enjoying my rhythm and some errors that have been there in my basics have been cleared too. I am bowling well right now. Recovery has been full in a way and I am fully ready for the World Cup.”Come India’s first World Cup match – against South Africa at the Rose Bowl on June 5 – and Kuldeep could well return to his match-winning ways.”It is a different format, a 50-over game is a lot different to a T20. The conditions are a lot different too. The wickets there will be a lot faster, the ball will spin too when the temperature will be high and we will get dry pitches. Spinners will get a huge advantage and that remains my focus.”Among the current lot of bowlers going for the World Cup, Kuldeep Yadav has played the maximum ODIs – a total of 30 games – since the start of 2018. And, he has been most successful too, taking 65 wickets with as many as five four-wicket hauls. The number two in that list is his partner Yuzvendra Chahal, with 45 wickets from 24 matches. Together, they’ve scripted India’s success story in the ODI format on many occasions in the recent times.”We bowl well in partnership and have won many matches for India together. Our role will be really crucial in the middle overs in ODIs. We have got breakthroughs in the middle period in this format. The fans have high expectations from us. Virat bhai gives full freedom and leads from the front. It is a big thing for a youngster if he gets so much support from his skipper. He has really backed me and Chahal a lot. He always keeps telling us to get wickets. To see your captain showing so much faith in your ability is a great thing. Not just him but the entire team management and all the senior players including Mahi bhai (MS Dhoni) and Rohit bhai back us a lot. Mahi bhai keeps on telling you such minute things on the field which are so useful for a bowler. This is a good sign for the team.”There have been times though when only one of either Yadav or Chahal has figured in the playing eleven and the success rate and striking capability deteriorates considerably in the spin department.advertisement”Well, because of the team combination, only one of us plays at times. But performance of the one who is playing is a different thing altogether. Yes, we are more comfortable when bowling together and understand each other really well. We bowl well in partnership as both of us are attacking bowlers and that is a huge plus.”With England-Pakistan ODI series witnessing 350-plus totals, the writing on the wall may be quiet clear for the bowlers in the World Cup. Australia coach Justin Langer too has advised his bowlers do develop “thick skin” on flat wickets in the offing.”Yeah, I think he is right. Looks like there are some really good batting wickets in England. If the weather is not hot there then we will go for a lot of runs. I think that to attack is the best option there. We can stop any team before 300 by getting wickets. That is the reason I believe that middle overs will be really important for us in this format.”So, are we going to see any new variation from Yadav in the coming weeks?”I haven’t really thought of it so far but hopefully something new will be there in my arsenal. I have worked really hard in the past few weeks. I will definitely try something in the World Cup, it is going to be a long tournament and I need to constantly sharpen my skill. The excitement is high and the expectations huge from us. I don’t feel much pressure. I am more excited right now and waiting for the tournament to start.”Also Read | Kuldeep Yadav clarifies MS Dhoni comments: His tips invaluable, people love spreading rumoursAlso Read | Kuldeep Yadav credits skipper Virat Kohli for giving freedom to attackAlso Read | IPL setback won’t hurt Kuldeep Yadav in World Cup: Dilip VengsarkarAlso Read | At times MS Dhoni goes wrong with his tips, says Kuldeep Yadav in jestFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
